Hi everyone. So I haven’t watched any of the new Hazbin yet, but what I have seen is- that video. Yes. And as I watched it, I couldn’t help but think that there was something off about it. Something that was really bothering me. And I’m sure all of you have noticed it too.
That guy’s self-insert really does not match the art style.
I mean, he just looks off. He doesn’t match the setting at all. And look how small his head is compared to Charlie’s! It’s ridiculous! This guy really needed an OC that fit within that world, and I’m going to step up to the task… sort of. I won’t be putting that much effort in, honestly.
I mean, I don’t know who this guy is outside of this specific video. And I don’t exactly care, so I’m just gonna put a design together around basic wiki info and a google image search. What I’m really more interested in here is trying to do this in a way that finds harmony with the Hazbin Hotel house-style.
The first thing I took note of was his existing character OC’s colour palette, which I planned to keep as close as possible to the existing character. Even though I wasn’t implementing it at this stage, in this case I kept it in mind from the very start. This is because colour is one of the most recognisable elements of a character design, and I’m already required to change his silhouette.
After learning from the wiki that he’s a beatboxer, I decided to take some inspiration from Vox and give him an object for a head. Originally I was thinking of one of those cool bluetooth speakers that lights up at the top and the bottom, but then he ended up looking more like a microphone, honestly and I rolled with that. Kind of a cross between a microphone and a speaker, and with the colour of his skin that became more of a classy wood-panelled speaker kind of look.
I also made sure to include the cap, since it looked signature and all. And added a whole lot of ‘V’ shapes since Verbalase’s name starts with a ‘V’ and it works stylistically. ‘V’ shaped glasses, some use of triangular shape language to play with in the silouhette.
Then I went through the normal Vivziepop style checklist, bow tie, formal clothes, clawed hands, etc. To keep with the technology/sound theme, the bowtie is made up of a power button and two megaphones.
The posture is a reference to the video, and the electrical cables wrapped around the wrists and ankles are also unfortunately a reference to a moment from the video. Anyway! He’s not as detailed as your average Hazbin character, because this is low effort, but I think that this design looks at least a little less out of place than before.
I actually really like how this design turned out. I dunno. Let me know what you think in the comments please!
