Hi there!
This is a character design video regarding this mobile gacha Joseimuke/Otome game called Obey Me, so if you don’t know what that is you might be a little confused!
Just for some background info - Obey Me recently had this in-game event called TTWF, short for The Three World’s Festival, which came with special outfits for all the characters. It also has a main character that we never see.
Towards the end of the event there was actually a description of the protagonist’s outfit, and I felt particularly inspired by this design.
I really love how the print on the outfit turned out. If that fabric existed in real life I’d buy bundles of it. I also think the cut works pretty well. It almost looks like a uniform though. I used asymmetry as a theme and luckily that didn’t come back to bite me, and I really love the look of the pant and shoe on the right leg in particular.
Now, what am I NOT happy with, about this design. To start with there’s not enough white fabric in it to fit the theme, not even close. The silhouette is pretty good as an independent design but definitely doesn’t fit the rest. I feel like she’s actually showing too much skin when compared to the rest as well.
The other TTWF designs are very extravagant – and I don’t honestly think I’ve done that good of a job of matching that design motif. You’ll notice an abundance of ruffles, feathers, frills, capes, and other accessories which are fairly consistent on every character except Beel – who you’ll notice to make up for it has a patterned design on every single stretch of fabric in his outfit. There is no unpatterned cloth anywhere on that design.
I initially tried to make up for that deficit with a cape – but the cape was too simple and only took away from the design. I decided any more detail I could add would only be putting a hat on a hat.
This is one of those situations where if I wasn't doing it just for fun I would start from scratch and try out a new design – perhaps one where I used the same outline but flipped the white fabric and the pattern, then allowing me to layer accessories on top of the white fabric without it looking cluttered.
As it is, my biggest mistake here was focusing too much on the outfit description and not enough on the other designs I was trying to match it to. That’s very important for ensemble design.
